Year in Cinema 2017

14ENDLESS-master768

What a great year for cinema!
Theatrically I saw 198 films, representing 164 unique films with a handful of multiple viewings (including several of my top five) and a decent amount of 35mm projected films.

I had an unprecedented amount of 5/5 films in 2017, but when it came down to it I had to pick five for the top spots. Two came from first time feature directors. Here goes:

  1. Endless Poetry.
A new Jodorowsky film is pretty much always going to take the number one spot on my list; like Dance of Reality before it, Endless Poetry chronicles the early life of auteur director Alejandro Jodorowsky. The films are his most accessible work to date, with his trademark aesthetics but a more conventional (if not magically realist) narrative. I hope he’s able to get a film made that covers his filming of El Topo and the Holy Mountain.
  2. The Shape of Water.
A late entry, coming out with only a few weeks left in the year but it easily knocked other contenders out of the top five. I always hate when reviewers call a film a “love letter to____” but this is exactly that. A love letter to cinema, to monster films, to love stories.
  3. Ladybird.
As an actor, Greta Gerwig has infinite presence on film; you always notice her even in ensemble casts like 20th Century Women where she has to act alongside Annette Benning. It seems like the same can be said for her as a director; that despite Ladybird being her first feature she’s fully capable of standing out amongst more seasoned directors.
  4. Baby Driver.
This will be the film that defines Wright’s career. In light of the allegations re: Kevin Spacey I’m sure this will be dropped like it’s hot for awards consideration, but Wright gets everything perfect: the right cast, the right pacing, the right screenplay and music and masterfully ties it all together. I can’t wait to see what he does next.
  5. Blade Runner 2049.
Oh. It lost $100m at the box office? Too bad. This is a film where the design of the film is practically a character. If you expected a cookie cutter sequel or an action movie out of Villenueve you picked the wrong horse. But if you wanted an expertly filmed, expertly conceived movie? This is for you.

Home:

The rules are simple; log every movie watched at home (or the Overground Cinema) and which service/platform it was on. Include entire seasons of tv shows if “binge” watched, discard single episodes. Sit and ponder the amount of time I spend watching movies when  I could be doing something productive like bitching about politics on tumblr.

I tried to log everything, but there are gaps.

untitled-2

When I logged-in tonight to start working on my annual “my year in cinema” post I realized that it’s been almost a year since I’ve done any personal blogging. I’ve fallen in the #twittertrap of microposts where I get all of my joy/anger/frustration out in 138 characters or less. It really impacts my ability to write on my other blogs when I’m not writing here- I’ve seen the word count shrink on Occult Vibrations and Sacred Debris since I’ve left DR unattended in favor of shorter less articulate posts and I hate it. So I’m going to make “write more” my main resolution for 2017.  I’m trying to reprioritize how I archive things in the coming year which will affect how the blogs are updated, but when I do work on them I want to be able to say a little more than just “Uncredited photo, 1970s” for want of anything else to say. We’ll see how that goes.

It’s been quite a year since I last posted; I think there’s a communal feeling with most of the world that 2016 has been, to quote Gandhi, a total fucking cocksucker. When a year starts with the death of David Bowie and ends with a conceivably illiterate bully of a reality star becoming President you know that the days sandwiched between are going to be filled with nonsense. There’s a lot to process, a lot of really horrible events that we’ve suffered through and the reality that events like Aleppo and the Trump Presidency will follow us into the New Year- and it’s really easy to just write the whole year off with our heads down and the hopes that we can all forget about the great beast ’16.

So instead- I’m going to be a contrarian and celebrate all of the amazing experiences the year had to offer for me and mine.

  • Celebrating Julia’s 29th birthday at Walt Disney World. We were in a DOOMBUGGY at the Haunted Mansion and I got to kiss her as the clock struck midnight leading into her birthday in one of our favorite places.
  • Meeting HG Lewis- the “Godfather of Gore” several months before he passed away.
  • Meeting big boob aficionado/artist Rockin Jellybean and spending time with my Pushead friends at the NYC Hyperstoic Returns Event.
  • Stealing a little time with my wife at the Nude Beach.
  • Vasectomy! Being in control of my reproductive health with just a little pinch and a bunch of funny photos was one of the best days off I took this year.
  • Seeing Orbax and Pepper. I love them both and don’t see them nearly enough.
  • Making silly patches. Some sell. Some don’t.
  • Taking a stop-motion animation class with Julia at the Mutter Museum and creating a bizarre film about a homicidal rabbit.
  • Jimbos. So much Jimbos.

There were so many great times had in 2016, but if I had to pick just one thing I’d say that the work both Julia and I put into our marriage to make it magical, funny, comfortable, exciting, peaceful, wild and always out greatest adventure has been the most satisfying. Even if the coming year has as many curveballs as this one has had I know that we’ll weather the storm together in our silly little house with our creepy little dog, our family and friends and, again quoting Gandhi, we’ll fuck it right in it’s keister.

If you had to pick just one thing that made 2016 a great year for you- what would it be?

The Hateful 8- Print #16 on 70mm

I saw a lot of movies in 2015. A butt numbing amount. While I didn’t log movies watched at home or at the Overground Cinema, I kept a complete list of films I saw theatrically.

From 1st January 2015 (The Woman in Black 2) to 31s December 2015 (Daddy’s Home) I saw 184 unique movies with an additional 22 second, third or fourth screenings.

I saw Star Wars ep VII: The Force Awakens four times theatrically, which topped the list as my #1 movie of 2015. Ridley Scott’s The Martian came in at second place and Christopher Nolan’s 35mm QUAYS short as a close third.

I made a quick trip to NYC to see the Quays at the Film Forum, presenting their work on 35mm, films curated by Christopher Nolan to accompany his short; as always they were enigmatic and fully deserving of their reputation as eccentrics.

Full Top Ten:

1. Star Wars ep VII: the Force Awakens.

I tried to keep a Letterboxd diary with mini-reviews of the films I saw theatrically in 2015; I’m fairly sure I missed a few here and there but this is as complete a list as I have: http://letterboxd.com/OVRGNDcinema/

My favorite review was for one of my least favorite films of the year:

Imagine for a second that you’re getting a handjob. The giver is attractive, but more than that it’s someone you’ve wanted to give you a handjob for a really long time and now they’re doing it. Not too fast, not too slow, just enough tension and they’re hitting all the right notes. You think it couldn’t get much better but then they start talking dirty to you and it’s everything you’ve always wanted.

Now imagine that two thirds of the way through the handjob your dreamboat is replaced with your old boss. The one that smelled like mothballs and taco meat. Then imagine that your old boss, who’s now rubbing one out for you, has arthritis and calluses on their gross, liverspotty hand. They take you the rest of the way there and with a unsatisfied moan you’re done.

You still finished and the first 2/3 of the HJ were great- so do you really want to complain? That’s kind of how Fantastic Four was.

You still get yours, but ultimately you feel kind of let down and a little traumatized.

It was a really fun year for movies, and I look forward to another year of spending more time in a theater than out of one!
