Tuesday 10.30.12

Survived Hurricane Sandy with no incidents. Power stayed on all night, no projectiles launched through windows or trees falling on my (admittedly horrifically tragic) car. Just a lot of wind, a little rain and a total shutdown of my city. Today was a different story- my daily bike ride into center city started with me narrowly (literally- ten paces or so) escaping being caught in a car wreck. Had I not turned when I did I would have been pinned between the car speeding to make the light (he didn’t) and the SUV he plowed into. Close call. I could smell the burned rubber of tires and radiator fluid, even feel the disturbance in the air from the collision. I skidded to a stop (I’ve yet to get those brake pads sorted out) and called 911.

The Philadelphia 911 Operator who took the call reinforced the stereotypes of Philadelphia 911 Operators. Rude, dismissive and condescending. Yes, I do appreciate that you have a ‘heavy volume of calls’ due to the Hurricane, but right around the time the driver got out of the car with blood running down his face, totally disoriented, I kind of don’t care to hear the PGW/PECO spiel. I’ll skip to the good samaritan portion of my day, report the accident and get back to biking. Thanks. Ugh.

The rest of the bike ride wasn’t terrible. Our bike lanes were totally clogged with debris so I had to ride in the street, but the cars seemed to be working with me and I made it to the gym without incident. The wind was still brutal, but… I was biking the day after a hurricane. Can’t say I didn’t expect it.

After the gym I caught a showing of SILENT HILL at the Riverview. I seem to recall that it has a subtitle, but… it doesn’t really matter. It’s pretty much more of the same. Spooky town. Cenobite-y looking monsters. Lack of a real plot. I didn’t hate it. Free ticket and all.

Monday 10.29.12

I finally gave up on ‘Spooky Themed’ photos. I made it almost the whole month but unable to find anything suitable and the weather keeping me from going out and taking something new… you get a chair and a tire. Spooky.

Speaking of weather. Hurricane Sandy. The Frankenstorm. It’s all any of us here on the east coast are talking about. Luckily I still have power and aside from the entire city being closed…. things aren’t too bad here yet. The rain has slowed down, but the wind is speeding up. Looking out my window I can see the neighbor’s flag whipping back and forth. I’ll remember to talk to them about flag etiquette if we don’t all die in the storm. It’s not really freaking me out; growing up in Florida in the middle of a hurricane zone really sort of desensitizes you to the effects of the big storms like this. I’ve watch my barn’s roof get ripped off and heavy farm equipment get picked up and flown halfway across the yard, so a little bit of wind and rain doesn’t really bother me. Who knows if this will get any worse… but I’ve got a bunch of sardines, Clif bars and a roasted chicken, so to hell with it.

I’ve currently got some AirBnB folks staying in the guest room. They’re set to depart tomorrow, but we’re waiting to see if their bus has been canceled. I offered them the room free of charge if their plans get skunked, figure it must be pretty nerve wracking to be trapped in a city you don’t know with an epic storm breathing down your neck and have to worry about where you’re going to be sleeping if things go pear shaped.  So aside from the comp’d room, I’ve offered them free alcohol (a well stocked home always has a bottle of the big four, even if it’s owner doesn’t drink) to take their minds off of things, and they’ve set about to watch Human Centipede. I’d hate for them to get stranded here, but they’re at least really pleasant guests so it could be worse.

(took a bit of a break)

No real update on the storm. There’s a loose cable outside that keeps hitting the door and scaring me silly and Bailey won’t poop to save his life, but at least we still have power and no trees flying through our windows. I used the little break from typing to start roasting that chicken. Forty cloves of stinky garlic stuffed under the skin, in the cavity, around the edges. It’s making my house smell amazing. I’ve notified my Australians that the house is about to be made vampire proof and they’re on board. Going to do a little kale/brussels sprouts/chickepeas side and then retreat to my room to spend the next twelve hours or so watching horror movies and cuddling with Bailey. I’m in a super sentimental mood tonight; happens sometimes and when it does my close friends are likely to get a message/text/etc of me going on about how much I love them and how important to me they are. I don’t emote nearly enough, so it all sort of builds up and when it overflows like this I end up coming off like a teenage girl with her first crush. I think they forgive me my trespasses.
I just checked on my Dad- he’s close to Atlantic City and I was getting a little worried, but he said things are fine there and that despite a little rain and wind, he’s had no issues. Again, you’re talking about someone born and raised in Florida who has a similar detachment from the hurricane panic, so it could be terrible over there and the Gator would probably think it’s ‘not bad, not bad’. Plus chaos gives him an excuse to poke at stuff with post-hole diggers or a machete, and when your name is the Gator, that’s like money from home. I’ll keep checking in with him, of course- looks like NJ and NY are going to get hit the worst. Crazy.

Sunday 10.28.12

Everyone on the east coast is preparing for Hurricane Sandy (they’re calling it Frankenstorm. That’s just dumb) while Bailey and I relax and watch horror movies. Maybe I should be a little more freaked out, but growing up in central Florida leaves you a little nonchalant about hurricanes. Pictures are flooding Facebook of empty grocery store shelves and Twitter tweets of panicked shoppers abound. I think people just don’t know how to deal with a little rain and wind anymore. The last time we had a major hurricane come through Philly it was a dud. Public transit closures, a city wide state of emergency and general panic and it was barely raining. I guess no one wants to have the next Katrina on their hands, so they just overreact so they can say they reacted.

Just the same I’m going to pack Bailey in the car tonight and drive him into work with me; I’d rather have him with me in case things actually do get bad; paying $8 for parking is a lot better than biking home in crappy weather to take care of my creepy little buddy. We’re going to go in a little early, watch a movie or two at the Overground and then see what the night brings us.

The Superheroes and Villains party last night was great. I always feel like such a square for never dressing up, and seeing all of the folks in costume made me wish I wasn’t so much of a stick in the mud. Then again, but around 1am when folks had been in costume for a few hours, were grumpy and sweaty and shedding their costumes in favor of jeans and sneakers reminded me why I don’t do it. I keep telling myself ‘next year’ but I’m sure I’ll always remain the Death of Fun.

I think I’ve given up on trying to make Halloween plans this year. Kinda sucks, but no one really seems that into it. It’s one of those schedule things, I think- everyone celebrated it this weekend while they have off. Maybe I’ll just watch a few spooky movies and resign myself to a calm, quiet night. My street doesn’t really get a lot of trick or treaters and I never really stock up on candy, so a chill night at the bar watching Halloween and Nightmare Before Christmas is my fallback plan. I’d say being an adult sucks, but I’ll never give in to actually being an adult, so I’ll still cross my fingers that I’ll fall into something fun.

Saturday 10.27.12

The absolute worst time to remember that I needed to change the brake pads on my bike is at a stop sign. It wasn’t really a stop sign for me, for what it’s worth. It was more a skid out of control and slam into a car sign. She was a good sport about it- some tattooed maniac flying towards her car, furiously grabbing his brakes could go either way for some folks, but she took it in stride. No damage to her, no damage to me and after a bit of a laugh, I biked off with it fresh in my head to get new pads first thing today.

First thing today I played with Bailey, made some Tazo Honeybush tea (it’s my new favorite) and played Draw Something for an hour (incidentally- my name is ovibrations. bring it on) instead of taking care of it. I’ll get them, for sure. Just need to get motivated to leave my lovebug of a dog and the comfort of my day to do it.

I did manage to get a decent amount of house cleaning done in between drawings- We have some AirBnB folks coming today (Australians. Always Australians) so it’s that motivation I need to do a full kitchen and living room cleanup. Make sure all the dishes are squared away, the countertops and stove cleaned, the floor swiffered and everything that has no place put in one. One of the best things about being an AirBnb host (aside from the money and meeting new people) is that it motivates me to do more housekeeping. Not that our house is messy, but sometimes basic tidyness gets the better of me and having paying guests tends to remind me to clean up.

Sure, some still nitpick- I think that some guests forget that it’s someone’s house and not a hotel/hostel. Instead of addressing something, they tell you that they’re having an amazing time then mention in their review that the waste basket in the bathroom wasn’t swapped out between guests. I’ll get my staff right on it. Jeepers. Most of them are really rad- I haven’t had a negative experience yet. Just wish that they’d ask me to fix the little nitpicks before publicly posting about it. Perhaps it’s my fault- I review them positively even when they’re a little messy or leave the door unlocked… c’est la vie. It’s free money, fun new people and a lot of fun even with the little snags.

Work is looking like it’s going to be fun tonight if people don’t get too freaked out by the ‘Frankenstorm’ that forecasters are calling for. One of our leather clubs is going to be hosting their yearly Super Heroes & Villains party tonight. Folks get really creative with their costumes; sure some comes as an existing Superhero, but others go all out and make their own characters with a kinky or leather flair to them. It’s one of the most fun events of the year for me- Halloween plus Superheroes plus a little kink- it’s perfect.

Of course I’ll be dressed in my standard outfit of gap + levi’s + chucks, but it’s the thought that counts. I don’t call myself the death of fun for no reason. I kind of wanted a Lone Ranger style mask to at least pretend that I was dressed up, but I forgot to pick one up and the idea of going to a costume store the Saturday before Halloween is about as pleasant as the thought of jamming a cactus in my britches- Sure I’ve done it, but I wouldn’t want to do it again. So instead I’ll go as ‘Disgruntled Bar Manager’ again and just have a good time.

The Thirty One Days of Horror films marathon has gone great so far; I’ve missed a few days because of travel, but I’ve doubled up a few days to compensate. Some of these are films I haven’t watched in years, so it’s been great to revisit them, especially the ones that I get to watch at the Overground. Big screen Suspiria was kickass. The overground is nice and spooky on it’s own, but when you’re sitting there in the middle of the room, in the dark, with that Goblins score… just perfect. I’ve got a bunch of films in queue to watch even after the marathon is over.
